King Ludwig II’s Fairy Tale Castle: Neuschwanstein in Germany
When Ludwig II commissioned the construction of this medieval blend of Romanesque and Gothic castle in 1869, little did he know that he would be constructing the most photographed castle in the world.
Often referred to as the “Fairy Tale King” or “Mad King Ludwig,” Ludwig II’s dream-like castle is by far one of the favorite highlights of people who visit Munich and the region in Bavaria.

Our tour gives you the opportunity to view the castle like no other tour, by bike. On the bike ride, you will be able to see the Neuschwanstein castle as the fantastical dream brought to life by Ludwig II. Not only that, the bike tour allows you to admire the surroundings of the breathtaking panoramas of the Bavarian Alps and lush forests. We even take you for a ride around a serene lake, not so far from the town of Schwangau near Füssen.
After the ride and lunch with a spectacular view of the castle, you will be able to see the inside of Ludwig’s castle. Inside Neuschwanstein Castle, you will be able to witness the lavish interiors, dedicated to the artistic celebration of medieval German Romance and the operas of Richard Wagner. We meet promptly at 8:30 at our Shop situated on Bräuhausstrasse 10. From there our guide will lead you to the bus at 8:45am.
You will return to Munich between 7:00-7:30 P.M.

Tickets to enter the Neuswanstein Castle are guaranteed by us & cost an additional €22,50 per person which incl. the booking fee charged by the castle. This is payable in cash, to the guide, on the day of your tour.

- Optional Castle Entrance / Tour ticket expense: 18,50€ Kids under 18 are just 4€ (booking fee only!).
- Lunch expense. We eat together (optional, of course) at an excellent brewery and restaurant with a fantastic beer garden and an amazing view of Neuschwanstein and the mountains behind it, which are only about 1.5 miles away. A meal and a beverage generally cost between 18-28€, including 19% sales, and tax but not a customary (10%) gratuity for the waiter or waitress
- A customary gratuity for the guide, his assistant, and the bus driver. Customary is a minimum of 5€ per person. We appreciate your generosity and request that you consider that the tips are split among three persons. Please also keep in mind that each of these three persons leave their homes well before 8 a.m. and do not leave until well after 8:00 p.m. It’s a long day and a much longer winter! Please show your appreciation!

- You must arrive at our SHOP, DISCOVER BAVARIA, by 08:45 a.m. Shoot for 08:30 a.m.!
- Our shop opens at 08:30, but not earlier. We will leave at 09:00 with or without you(!) and we will not take responsibility for you missing the tour if you show up late! If you are running late, CALL US ASAP (after 08:30) at +49 89 255 43 987 or -988. If you cannot make it on time for whatever reason, read FAQ Nr. 1 below!
- There is the option to go swimming in a pristine alpine lake during the bike ride. If you would like to do this, come prepared to do so!
- Wear good shoes for walking, and DO bring a light rain jacket, no matter WHAT the weather in Munich looks like at 08:00 a.m.!! The weather is sometimes TOTALLY different at 5:00 p.m. down near the mountains! If you come with nothing but shorts and a tee shirt and get caught in a torrential downpour with nothing else on you can wind up feeling colder than you ever have in your entire life. We highly recommend being prepared for such an eventuality! Here we like to quote Mike’s mom; „It’s better to have and not need than to need and not have!“

In „emergency“ instances (only!) you can come to an alternative meeting point, at 09.15 am at Albert-Rosshaupter Strasse 106, in front of Biker’s Best Fahrradshop.
This is for emergencies ONLY! If you are definitely not going to be able to make it to our shop by 08:45 for whatever reason then YOU MUST CALL US between 08:30 and 08:45 to inform us that you’re getting a cab to this location and that you WILL be there before 09:20 am at the very latest! If you can’t make it there by that time then you’re S.O.L. Sorry. As a consoltation, we welcome you to join us on our Classic Bike Tour of Munich at 11:30 at no additional charge, contingent on it not being fully booked!
That’s really nice of us, so please, do tip your guide generously while you’re telling him or her how much you enjoyed the tour! If the tour is fully booked you can come to our shop and get a bike from us for the day instead.

If our tours are not already sold out you should be able to book online until 08:30 a.m. on the day of the tour. If, this is not possible it would be because the tour is fully booked, HOWEVER, as we operate in the Beer Drinking Capital of the World, out of 50 persons, it is relatively likely that at least a few of these persons chose to get a wee bit carried away the night before and just don’t have it in themselves to get out of bed by 08:00 to get onto a 2-hour bus ride.
In other words, no-shows are, indeed, pretty common! Available seats are given away on a first come first served basis at 08:47 a.m. Determination of who is first, 2nd, etc. is done based on the time of your EMAIL REQUEST to [email protected] and you must be at our shop by 08.30.
If you wind up waiting until 08:47 to no avail at least you’d be ready to embark on a fantastic day on a great bike with excellent advice on where you could go with it throughout Munich. Return to Munich is almost always around 7:30 p.m.

Our bike ride is not strenuous. If you even think you could do it, you almost certainly can.
This tour includes a 30-45 minute uphill walk, HOWEVER, it is possible to take a bus up the back side of the crag instead of the walk for a modest fee of just 3€. From where the bus drops us off, at the legendary bridge named after Ludwig II´s mother,Mary, we walk about 15 minutes downhill at a relaxed pace to the castle entrance and later, another 15-20 minutes further downhill, back to our coach for the relaxing 2-hour ride back to Munich.

Our guests are free to use their time between arrival at approximately 11:00 a.m. until our departure at approximately 5.30 p.m. as they choose to. Options include doing a tour of the interior of Hohenschwangau castle as well as Neuschwanstein (extra expense), using our bikes for independent exploration (no extra expense), renting a peddle boat to go out onto the incredibly scenic Alpsee, using the summer alpine slide at the base of the Tegelberg for a modest fee, taking the gondola to the top of the Tegelberg and hiking to the spot from which most of the „classic“ photos of Neuschwanstein have been taken from (Adults 27€, kids 7€ …2023), doing a tandem paraglide (189€ – 249€ depending on duration – 2023), among other possibilities.
Our guide and his assistant can / will consult with you if you are interested in leaving the group for any period of time. They will provide you with all pertinent information regarding where and when you will need to be to re-group, exchange cell numbers with you, etc.

No, unfortunately visiting Linderhof or the village of Oberammergau is not a possibility on this tour. Sorry for that. If this is of particular interest to you then we recommend you consider taking one of our extraordinary private tours by car or van.

Regardless of the season, it’s advisable to check the weather forecast closer to your visit date, as weather conditions can vary. Additionally, be prepared for some degree of temperature fluctuation and the possibility of rain, especially during the transitional seasons.

At Mike’s Bike Tours, we regret to inform you that we are not allowed to conduct tours inside the castle. Consequently, access to the Neuschwanstein Castle’s interior is only possible as part of a guided tour. Your admission ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a specific time and in a specific language—in our case, English. The guided tours start punctually, and it is our responsibility to ensure your timely and hassle-free arrival. The tickets are pre-reserved, and our ability to access them depends on the number of bookings we have. This is one of the main reasons why the tickets are sold separately from the tour itself.

The uphill walk from Hohenschwangau to Neuschwanstein Castle is not particularly challenging. It offers a scenic route with beautiful views, and many visitors find it enjoyable. If you do not wish to walk, there is a possibility to ride a carriage or ride a small mini van with an extra fee ranging from 2 to 5 Euros.
